There have been several scare stories in the UK press recently reporting that the golf developments under way, and planned in our area cannot be supported because of the lack of water in the region.
Murcia boasts that it has 320 days of sunshine per year and is a dry area (particularly when compared with the UK). However, unlike the UK, the Spanish have a “national grid” of water channels bringing water to the dryer regions and are very used to dealing with dry conditions (for example all of the farming here utilises irrigation and has done for years).
Golf courses need a great deal of water but as part of the planning process in Murcia, the developers must prove that they can recycle 75% of all of the water used by the resort, for irrigation of the course. This needs a substantial investment by the developer but is achievable and all of the golf resorts that we sell have met this target.
The Murcia region is THE boom area regarding up market development in Spain and they have made provision for extra water by planning a desalination plant near San Pedro del Pinatar. In addition to this, the largest developer in Europe (Polaris World), who is building a total of 10 golf resorts in the region, is itself building another desalination plant near Mazarron which will supply water to over 200,000 homes.
Unfortunately bad news seems to sell newspapers regardless of accuracy.
