New Marina at La Manga gets the Go-Ahead
Tomas Maestre has been given the green light to build the new marina (Puerto Mayor) with 950 new deep water moorings on the Mediterranean opposite the current largest marina in the region the Tomas Maestre Marina - which is located in the Mar Menor. Permission has also been given to dredge the waterway that links the existing Tomas Maestre marina and the Mar Menor with the Mediterranean.
The Supreme Court concluded that claims by environmentalists (including Greenpeace) were inadmissible. However, the court believed that the existing plans for an urbanization surrounding the new marina should not go ahead in their present form.
Building of the new Marina ( Puerto Mayor ) is expected to begin again in January, once modifications to the original plans have been made in line with the Supreme Court's decision. This will be a welcome boost for this area of La Manga as the existing Tomas Maestre Marina is at full capacity and will further increase it’s appeal as one of THE watersports areas in the Mediterranean.
Hopefully, the Supreme Court in the region of Murcia has now ended this saga (that began way back in 1975) for the builder and developer Tomas Maestre. Original plans to build a marina and urbanization were presented to the council in 1975 and have, since that date, been stuck under piles of red tape and protests from the Environmentalists action groups including Greenpeace. The Supreme Court in Murcia has now decided that the new marina, Puerto Mayor, can be built and can include 950 new moorings. Environmentalists will be appealing the decision.
