La Manga and The Mar Menor
The La Manga Strip is a unique feature in Europe, 21 Km of land with sandy beaches and sea on both sides. It is difficult to imagine a more idyllic place for all lovers of water sports, marinas and beaches, you are never more that a few meters from the sea. Where else would you find a choice of two seas, offering the crystal clear waters of the Mar Menor, with its shallow warm salty waters or the majestic Mediterranean with its surfing waves and marine reserves? There is a choice of many water sports, including jet skis, yachting, scuba diving, kite surfing, boat trips and many more.
For those who prefer a less energetic way of life, there are many blue flag beaches with their own sunbeds, life guards and beach bars. There are plazas with shops, street cafes and bars, many great places to while away a few hours.
The villages around the Mar Menor date back to pre Roman times and infact it was the Romans who set up the salt industry in this area. They also discovered the benefits of the therapeutic clays which can be found in various parts of the Mar Menor as a result of the many hours of sunshine and the high salinity of the waters. The therapeutic clays are beneficial for many skin complaints, as well as rheumatism and arthritis etc.
There are many harbours and marinas around the Mar Menor offering a variety of local fish restaurants, international sailing clubs, scuba diving and nautical clubs. They are also great places to just relax and watch the boats come and go.
The region is also a favourite for those wishing to party throughout the summer as each little village holds its own Fiesta and the fun continues though to the evenings with fireworks, bands, fun fairs, traditional costumes, horses and wine, a great combination!
There is something for everyone, so once you have discovered this beautiful part of Spain, you will want to return.
